ResumoThe microtopography of graphite surfaces may be revealed using optical microscopy, evaporated gold being employed as the decorant. From the symmetry properties of the condensed gold nuclei, it is concluded that the {111} faces of the metal grow epitaxially on the {000l} faces of the graphite. A model is proposed to account for this fact.
