Resumo

A model for packed beds with down flow in which a first-order exothermic reaction occurs in developed and analyzed. Various limiting models that are valid for large Peclet numbers and/or a constant heat source as reaction term are derived. The influence of the boundary conditions, the Peclet number, the activation energy, the Damkoehler number (conversion) and the heat of reaction on the stability of the one-dimensional flow with respect to two- and three-dimensional perturbations is determined. An examination of the numerical values shows that the parameters for typical packed beds may lie in the region in which the uniform flow is unstable.
