ResumoOBSERVATIONS of electrons with energies between 13.4 and 690 eV made at the first encounter of Mariner 10 with Mercury (Mercury I) unexpectedly showed1 the presence of a strong bow shock wave enclosing a magnetosheath and magnetosphere with boundaries the positions of which could be explained by assuming Mercury to possess an appreciable magnetic moment in agreement with and complementary to the observations made by the magnetometer carried by the spacecraft2. Inside these boundaries were found distinct distributions of magnetospheric particles.
