Resumo

As part of an effort to improve the teaching of medical ethics in the College of Medicine, Lagos University two-day workshops were organised. Participants included people from various walks of life, for example politicians, lawyers, doctors, and patients. The workshops were quite successful, and have led to more extensive teaching of medical ethics in the college.A description is provided of the two-day workshops on medical ethics held in 1982 and 1983 for final-year students at the College of Medicine of Lagos University, one of the 12 medical schools in Nigeria. The workshops consisted of lectures by health professionals, government officials, and representatives of religious groups; panel discussions involving the audience; and group discussions supervised by faculty members. Multiple-choice tests taken by students before and after the 1983 workshop showed a significant improvement in factual knowledge about medical ethics in general and about specific ethical issues in Nigeria. As a result, a week will be set aside for annual workshops for final-year students.
