ResumoHeart failure (HF) is a complex disorder in which a number of physiological systems participate, acting on the myocyte and interstitial cells. Galectins are a family of soluble beta-galactoside-binding lectins that play regulatory roles in inflammation, immunity, and cancer. Recently, it has been suggested that galectin-3 plays a role in the pathophysiology of HF and that it may be a candidate biomarker in this disorder [ 1 Lainscak M. Coletta A.P. Sherwi N. Cleland J.G. To further investigate the association between galectin-3 and HF, we examined plasma galectin-3 levels in relation to markers for inflammation, neurohormonal activation, systolic function and mortality in patients with chronic HF.
