Resumo

Two amber suppressors, su-II and su-Y Mel have been converted to ochre suppressors by single-step mutations. Mapping data suggest that these conversions are due to changes within the suppressor genes. The conversions allow UAA suppression and result in an efficiency of suppression of both UAG and UAA lower than that of the original UAG suppression. The effects of these ochre suppressors on the growth of the bacterial cell indicate that the UAA codon has some important role in the translation process.
