The research for this paper was conducted in Tonga during three separate visits: several months in 1972, a year during 1973–1974, and a brief stay in November, 1975. My investigations were funded by a comparative research project at Harvard on law and conflict management (NIMH grant No. RO 1-MH-19531); by an NIH training fellowship, administered through the Department of Anthropology at Harvard; and by NSF grant No. BNS76-03918.
