Jan Alojzy Matejko (June 24, 1838–November I, 1893), born and raised in Krakow, where he remained his entire life and died, has a special place in Polish culture and nationalism. During his lifetime his art created much controversy among his countrymen, was censored by the Russian czarist government, and during World War II headed the blacklist of works to be destroyed by the German armies invading Poland.
