Resumo

The epidemiology of infective endocarditis (IE) has changed worldwide over the past half-century [ [1] Slipczuk L. Codolosa J.N. Devila C.D. et al. Infective endocarditis epidemiology over five decades: a systemic review. PLoS ONE. 2013; 8: e82665 Crossref PubMed Scopus (312) Google Scholar ]. In particular, patient age and male predominance have increased over time together with the rates of staphylococcal and enterococcal IE, while the rates of EI due to viridans streptococci have decreased. These changes have important implications for the modern management of IE [ [2] Thuny F. Grisoli D. Collart F. Habib G. Raoult D. Management of infective endocarditis: challenges and perspectives. Lancet. 2012; 379: 965-975 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (327) Google Scholar ]. Several international and Italian studies have shown an increase in elderly and chronically ill patients with IE [ 1 Slipczuk L. Codolosa J.N. Devila C.D. et al.
