ResumoTHERE are no published reports on hematology of Coturnix coturnix japonica (Japanese quail). Hematology reflects physiological responsiveness of the organism to its environment. The present hematologic study was initiated to provide further information on the physiology of Coturnix. The relatively short span from birth to maturity in Coturnix provides a useful experimental tool with which to study the effect of age, nutrition, disease and environment upon cellular and plasmal constituents. The increasing demand for germ-free Coturnix in certain types of cancer research (Reyniers and Sacksteder, 1961) also necessitates detailed studies on the hematology of Coturnix. The study of comparative vertebrate hematology is contributing greatly to our knowledge of the functions of leucocytes. Comparative physiological studies presently are hindered by a lack of general agreement concerning the homologies of morphologic and cytologic types of cells in various species.
