Effects of Environmental Stressors on Livestock

Resumo

Abstract The effects of subjecting cows to repeated stress in a test box were measured. Type of stimulus was found to be important. Some animals responded more to silence in the box and isolation from other animals, others to the high noise intensity applied in the last two experiments. The kind of response measured, e.g. motor activity, reaction to food or pulse frequency, was also important. High and statistically significant correlations were calculated between the score-evaluating response to food of the cows in the test box and their milk production in loose housing. Correlations for the current lactations were 0.568 + for the Slovak Spotted breed, 0.413 for the Black Spotted breed and 0.453 for the crosses of the Slovak Spotted breed × Black Spotted breed. For the averages of 2–3 lactations, correlations were 0.693 ++ , 0.648 ++ and 0.417, respectively.
