Resumo

An improved method for the determination of the polymeric carbohydrates and glycoproteins of rat skin has been developed. It consists of successive extractions based on the removal of water-soluble components, the ground substance, the cellular components and components associated with fibers. Only glycoproteins seem to be water soluble. Hyaluronic acid is probably the main component of the ground substance fraction (0.16 M NaCl), and dermatan sulfate in the cell fraction (0.5 M NaCl). Sialic acids occur in detectable amount in all but the citrate soluble fractions. The largest proportion of all components seems to be present in an insoluble form with the insoluble collagen fraction, probably bound in some fashion.
