Resumo

Genotoxicity patterns observed in mutagenicity and DNA‐repair tests in bacteria suggest distinctive mechanisms for the interaction of chromium(VI) and chromium(III) with DNA. This is in agreement with physico‐chemical data, indicating that chromium(III) induces DNA‐protein and DNA‐DNA cross‐links and decreases the fidelity of DNA replication, while chromium(VI) unbalances nucleotide pools and, due to its oxidizing power, induces single‐strand breaks in DNA.
