Resumo

Studies in asthmatic subjects have shown that propranolol markedly reduces the one-second forced expired volume. By using sensitive, body plethysmographic methods, airway narrowing has also been observed in normal subjects, although they were unaware of increased difficulty in breathing, in spite of an airway resistance increase by 50 to 100 per cent in the first 30 minutes after propranolol administration. Aminophylline is a suitable bronchodilator when a wheeze or a frank attack of asthma develops in a patient receiving propranolol. Emphasis is laid on the hazards of propranolol treatment combined with exercise in the asthmatic patient.
