EVALUATION OF DYES FOR TRACING WATER MOVEMENT IN ACID SOILS

ResumoNONFLUORESCENT DYES WERE STUDIED TO FIND A DYE SUITABLE FOR MODEL STUDIES OF SOILS. NONFLUORESCENT DYES ARE AVAILABLE IN THE FOLLOWING FORMS: DIRECT, DISPERSE, ACID AND BASIC. BOTH DIRECT DYES AND ACID DYES HYDROLYZE TO PRODUCE ANIONIC FORMS. DISPERSE DYES ARE VERY FINE PARTICLES THAT ARE NOT WATER SOLUBLE AND DO NOT HYDROLYZE. BASIC DYES FORM CATIONS WHEN HYDROLYZED. BASIC DYES ARE ABLE TO SATISFY CATION EXCHANGE SITES OF THE SOIL AND ARE LIKELY TO BE POOR WATER TRACERS. EXPERIMENTATION DETERMINED THAT SUITABLE NONFLUORESCENT DYES FOR ILLUSTRATING STREAMLINES IN KAOLINITIC, ACID SOILS ARE ERIO FLOXINE 2G SUPRA (ACID RED 1), CRIMSON GR HI CONC (ACID RED 14), AND ALPHAZURINE B CONC (ACID BLUE 26). NONE OF THESE DYES MOVED AS RAPIDLY AS WATER. DYES WITH TWO SULFONIC ACID GROUPS MOVE MORE READILY THROUGH ACID SOILS THAN DO DYES WITH ONE SULFONIC ACID GROUP. DYES WERE USED TO TRACE DIVERGENCE OF STREAMLINES AROUND COURSE GRAVEL LENSES DURING UNSATURATED FLOW IN FINELY TEXTURED SOIL. AN EMPIRICAL CRITERION IS PROPOSED FOR CHOOSING POTENTIALLY SUITED DYES FOR WATER MOVEMENT STUDIES.
