ResumoWhen the Fourth Republic came to an end, France was still pursuing a cultural policy worthy of the late 19th century. Cultural policies were devised in the 34 years from 1959 to 1993, from Andre Malraux to Jack Lang, and generated a modernisation of unprecedented rapidity, comparable only to events in Holland and the Scandinavian countries. The creation of new concepts, a budget with a growth rate above that of the national budget, and a reorganisation of management structures were the result of fundamental changes combined with a surprising continuity. Though schematic, this paper sets out to provide a broad description of the birth and rapid transformation of a national cultural administration.
