Resumo

In this note, the most general form of the lagrangian of a particle in a constant and uniform electromagnetic field is derived using group-theoretical arguments based on Levy-Leblond's approach to the lagrangian gauge problem. The so-called minimal coupling is derived. In the case of a purely magnetic field, it is shown that the principle of minimal coupling by the magnetic charge breaks down if the invariance of the equations of motion under space reflexion is required.
