The earliest pertinent observations concern an epizootic in cattle and other herbivora observed in 1906 to 1908 in Santa Catarina, near the sea coast in southern Brazil. The affected animals invariably died after an illness of about a week, characterized by a progressive ascending paralysis, associated with salivation, difficulty in swallowing, emaciation and finally respiratory failure.
