Resumo

The implications of asymptotic freedom for thermal gauge theories are elucidated in the context of recent attempts to calculate the non-abelian running charge at high temperatures. It is argued that the thermodynamical breakdown of manifest Lorentz invariance limits the usefulness of the concept of a running charge. Instead a well-defined fixed charge is shown to exist, vanishing asymptotically with the temperature, which is the natural choice for an expansion parameter.
