ResumoPhysical property measurements have been carried out on a series of three glass-forming heavy metal fluoride compositions in which ZrF4 has been systematically replaced by HfF4. The generic composition (mol%) is 53xZrF453(1−x)HfF420BaF24LaF320NaF, with x values of 1, 0.5 and 0. Properties measured include melt viscosities over a range 10−1−1013 P and glass and melt electrical conductivities, densities and heat capacities. Replacement of ZrF4 by HfF4 increases the glass transition temperature and the 1013 P temperature by about 10°C. Aside from this, replacement of ZrF4 by HfF4 has very little effect on the other physical properties.
