ResumoIt is possible to grow the strictly autotrophic bacterium Thiobacillus thiooxidans on glucose as the sole source of energy by means of a culture system in which the medium is continually renewed. It appears that the inability of this organism to grow on glucose under more conventional conditions is due to the accumulation of toxic materials. Pyruvic acid can be isolated from the spent medium, where it is found at a level of approximately 0.2 mm. This amount of pyruvate completely inhibits growth when sulfur is the energy source.
