ResumoAn atom-probe study is presented of the electric field dependence of adsorption and desorption of hydrogen on tungsten (110). A distinct threshold field strength of approximately 3.8 V/Å was found for the desorption of hydrogen at 90 K. A simple theoretical model based on the Newns-Anderson model is presented to give a qualitative understanding of the experimental observations. Within this model a direct proportionality is derived between the reduction in binding energy of the adsorbate and the field strength.
