Resumo

The Cretaceous (Aptian–Lower Albian) Maconde Formation of the Rovuma Basin in northern Mozambique is documented and its sequence development is interpreted. New evidence for the age of the formation is presented, and a basinal marker horizon is identified in the upper part of the formation that may represent tectonic uplift of the underlying highly kaolinised? Jurassic clays. Two episodes of regional transgression are documented, which with further palaeontological refinement may in future be tied to regional and global transgressive episodes.
