Abstract A study of several stratigraphic sections near Whangarei demonstrates the presence of two Landon crystalline Iimestones—the thick, light-coloured Whangarei Limestone, and a thin, variably-coloured, impersistent and less pure limestone belonging to the Cape Rodney Formation that was deposited on an irregular, possibly faulted, surface. The latter limestone is followed upwards by associated sandstones, and then successively by a thick siltstone and a thick sandstone unit. A significant erosional episode between Te Kuiti and Waitemata groups probably separates the two limestones. The Waitakian (or immediately younger) Onerahi Chaos-breccia is probably a Waitemata Group Formation.
