ResumoThe attenuation of broad beams of 14 MeV neutrons in steel and polyethylene, and in combinations of these two materials, has been studied. While steel is the better material for attenuating the primary neutrons it is advantageous to add polyethylene to attenuate slowed-down neutrons scattered from the steel, followed by a further layer of steel to remove photons generated in the polyethylene. Data are given for the radiation components emerging from shields using various combinations of these materials.
