Resumoheir patients. This is particularly the case of the istory of acute intravascular access. Over the past 000 years access has been gained to the venous nd arterial circulations using a variety of methods. n the late 1600s, Frederik Ruysch (1638—1731), escribed and perfected the method of injecting lood vessels.1,2 In emergency and critical care conditions, such s in the case of a cardiac arrest, practitionrs commonly are required to place intravenous nd intra-arterial lines. On many occasions the ‘Seldinger technique’’ is used for these proceures. In the field of radiology, acute medicine nd cardiology the percutaneous intravascular ccess method developed by Sven-Ivar Seldinger 1921—1998) has had an enormous impact.3
