Abstract Negative ion formation from CCl 4 , CFCl 3 , CF 2 Cl 2 , and CF 3 Cl under low energy (0–10 eV) electron impact has been studied mass spectrometrically. Electron affinities of negative ion fragments resulting from dissociative electron attachment are determined by measuring both the appearance potentials and the translational excess energies over the resonances. For the process e − + CF 3 Cl → Cl − + CF 3 the decomposition of the negative ion intermediate CF 3 Cl − * shows a strong non statistical behaviour which may be explained by the short lifetime of the negative ion state with respect to autodetachment of the extra electron.
