Resumo

This chapter describes the extraction chromatography of actinides. Extraction chromatography combines the versatility of solvent extraction systems with the ease of operation of ion-exchange column chromatography. The low capacity of extraction chromatography columns, as compared to ion exchangers, reduces radiolysis problems and facilitates the dissipation of decay heat from the highly active nuclides. Extraction chromatography has proved appropriate not only for the separation of trace quantities of actinides but is also increasingly being used for the isolation and purification of macro amounts of transplutonium nuclides. Solvent extraction systems offer experimental guidelines for the choice of an appropriate extraction chromatographic system. The chapter reviews the extraction chromatography of actinides emphasizing the important usage of neutral (TBP), basic (substituted ammonium salts), and acidic (HDEHP) extractants and their application to separations of actinides in the di- to hexadent oxidation state.
