Resumo

The effects of attenuation and dispersion on the waveform and source characterisation of AE signals at the epicentre due to a vertical force have been estimated. These effects have distorted the AE waveform by increasing the rise time and decreasing the amplitude. The source waveform obtained by deconvolution of the AE signal in a highly dissipative and dispersive medium with the Green function calculated under the elastic assumption have led to erroneous results for source characteristics. The experimental observation of AE signals has been presented for a PMMA plate using an optical probe.
