Resumo

The opening of the global markets in the Third World and the sites of the collapsed Soviet empire provides massive opportunities for the global media markets dominated by a number of contenders — the USA, the growing EU, Japan, and the ‘tiger’ economies of Southeast Asia. What is at stake is both economic and cultural dominance. This paper examines one aspect of this struggle — the battle for domination in the arena of film and television production and distribution between the USA and the EU since the early 1980s.
