ResumoThe reaction kinetics in the excited state is determined by investigating the absorption and emission spectra and the time-dependence of the fluorescence intensity of 7-hydroxycoumarin and 4-methyl-7-hydroxycoumarin in different solvents. The results are interpreted using a model of the reaction which takes into account the dependence of diffusion-controlled rate parameters on the dielectric constant of the solution. By fitting the theoretical expressions for the rate parameters to the experimental values reaction parameters are obtained.
