ResumoA new method for the determination of size segregated atmospheric trace metal concentrations in small air volumes has been developed. By the use of sample holders for total-reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF) as impaction slides in a cascade impactor, a lead concentration as low as 1 ng m−3 could be determined in an air volume of 5001 over a corresponding sampling time of 40 min. The sensitivity of the method is limited by the fact that particles <0.5 μm cannot be separated by impaction but have to be collected on a filter. The first experiments indicate that this restriction may be overcome by the use of a low-pressure cascade impactor.
