Resumo

Abstract Documented chromosome numbers are provided for the eight currently recognised New Zealand species of Clematis—C. afoliata, C. cunninghamii, C. foetida, C. forsteri, C. marata, C. marmoraria, C. paniculata, and C. quadribracteolata—and for all four entities now combined as C. forsteri. All the taxa investigated are diploid with 2n = 16 chromosomes, and have a similar karyotype, except for some variation in the satellites of two chromosome pairs. The chromosome number and generalised karyotype of New Zealand Clematis taxa agree with most cytological studies made elsewhere in the world for non-New Zealand taxa of the genus.
