ResumoEsophageal achalasia is not common in the pediatric age group and hence may not be recognized promptly. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential in order to save the child from immense discomfort, both physical and emotional. In 15 patients whose symptoms of achalasia developed before age 15 years, the favorable results obtained from esophagomyotomy according to the modified Heller technique have led us to believe that this should be the primary treatment of choice for pediatric achalasia. Best results have been achieved in patients operated on early in the course of the disease.
