ResumoThe aim of this paper is the study of mapuches' social representation and social imagery of non mapuches perceived by mapuches of Temuco and Santiago. Both representation and imagery refer to individuals as well as historical communities having a strong representation of their past, built upon stereotypes and prejudice that underlie interethnic relations inherited from colonial society. The method is qualitative in order to reveal mapuches' social representation and non mapuches' social imagery. The codification and data analysis are based on Glasser & Strauss (2002) who propose open, axial and selective forms of codification.Content analysis worked with texts derived from semistructured interviews applied to mapuches. Results reveal three main categories: origin, value and assessment which organize the main aspects of perceived discrimination that mapuches in their everyday relation with non mapuches.
