Resumo

From the dawn of photography there was an awareness that the new medium went beyond mechanical recording. The series of images of Sorrento from Capodimonte confirms the strong connection between the formal research carried on by Robert Rive and Giorgio Sommer. Rive was probably the first to combine negatives to make views. Concerning Sommer, it was found that there exist several versions in different formats of the Sorrento views, obtained by different negatives carrying the images of foreground rocks and of the background.
