ResumoWe study the operation of a coherently pumped two-level laser, in which atoms are prepared initially in a coherent superposition of the upper and lower levels. There is phase locking but no threshold for the laser field. The coherently pumped laser can exhibit “lasing without population inversion” and is the simplest system for lasers without inversion. A simple physical picture is given to explain the lasing without inversion.
