ResumoA simplified and relatively atraumatic method is described for placing a silicone tube stent through the lacrimal drainage system during a dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR). Two short, pliable metal probes ("miniprobes") are attached to the ends of a length of silicone tubing. After the lacrimal sac and nasal mucosa have been incised, the probes carry the tubing through the lacrimal canals and the operative wound and down into the nasal cavity. After routine DCR the stent is left for three weeks to ensure a patent drainway. Excess scar or other conditions may suggest longer retention.
