A new horizontal bottle The new horizontal bottle was especially designed to procure water and suspended material from near the bottom, particularly in the estuaries and shallow waters. The bottle (see Fig.1) is composed of a rigid plastic tube (1), with the capacity of about one liter, turning on a ballast-iron disk (2) perforated by four gaps of 5 cm diameter which eases the submersion and which will rest on the bottom. A brass-clip (3) bears a rotation axle in its foot (4) and a helm in its top (5), which has a closure system (6) by messenger and a gyratory ring of suspension (7). The two rubber balls (8), provided with a little stainless steel wire (10), are connected inside the bottle by a sandow (9), which sandow fastens the bottle. Thus, when the apparatus reaches the bottom, the disk settles and the bottle turns in the stream direction. As soon as the stream has carried away the removed sediments, a messenger is sent in order to shut the bottle. This bottle can also be used in the middle water, in which case the disk is replaced by a profiled weight (6–22 lb. according to the stream). La préparation de la campagne d'études du Rio de la Plata, entreprise actuellement par le Service Hydrographique Naval de la Marine argentine, m'avait conduit en 1962 à étudier des bouteilles horizontales permettant de recueillir l'eau et le matériel en suspension, notamment au voisinage du fond. Les prototypes, puis une première série ont été construits par les Ateliers du Service Hydrographique de la Marine à Buenos Aires, tandis qu'en 1964, une deuxième série était réalisée en France pour les besoins de notre laboratoire actuel. Ainsi, une quinzaine de cettes bouteilles sont-elles actuellement en service en Argentine et en France ce qui, après différentes modifications et améliorations permet de donner ici le schéma d'un modèle bien au point.
