Resumo

Creep in Al - 4.6% Mg in the temperature range of 324 to 360 K has been investigated as a function of the applied stress function. Comparisons of properties are made between samples crept at a constant applied load (referred to as static creep) and samples crept with a varying tensile load (referred to as cyclic creep) such that the peak load is equal to the load applied statically. The average creep rates in cyclic creep were equal to or greater than the corresponding values for static creep even though the average stress was lower. Analysis of the activation energies and stress dependencies for static and cyclic creep revealed similar properties. The enhanced creep rates due to cyclic stressing are explained by recovery effects which occur during the low portion of each stress cycle.
