The Peruvian species Cleistocactus acanthurus (Vaupel) D. R. Hunt (Cactaceae) is illustrated. Its history, relationships, distribution, ecology, threats and cultivation requirements are discussed and a full description of the species is provided. For comparison, the related C. sextonianus (Backeb.) D. R. Hunt is also illustrated.
