ResumoJane Severance is the author of two children's picture books ( When Megan Went Away , 1979; Lots of Mommies , 1983) and one adolescent novel ( Ghost Pains , 1992). While all three books are groundbreaking, When Megan Went Away (1979) remains particularly significant in that it centers on a romantic relationship between two women and predates Lesléa Newman's Heather Has Two Mommies (1989), the book popularly considered to be the first picture book to depict lesbian women. In this interview, Severance discusses her motivations as an author, the reception of her work across time, and the state of the field of LGBTQ literature more generally.
