ResumoBY NOW, EVERYONE should be familiar with The Joint Commission’s National Safety Goals. The purpose of each goal is to promote a specific improvement in patient safety. It is the responsibility of each perianesthesia area to interpret the intent of the safety goals and implement them into practice. One of the 2006 goals was to improve the effectiveness of communication among care providers by implementing a standardized approach to “hand-off” communications, including an opportunity to ask and respond to questions. 1 The Joint CommissionHome page. 2007 Google Scholar Certainly this standard speaks to the perianesthesia environment where providers are involved in hand off of patients every single day. The ASPAN Clinical Practice Committee, who receives and answers questions from perianesthesia nurses throughout the United States and from around the world, continues to receive questions related to the implementation of this goal within perianesthesia practice. Ellen E. Sullivan, BSN, RN, CPAN, is a Nurse-in-Charge at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, MA.
