fundus and may be abolished by infiltrating the area of skin involved.This pain is probably an example of peritoneo-cutaneous radiation.The local anaesthesia is effective for three to eight hours, and the fact that it has been found possible to ensure absolutely painless childbirth proves the truth of Macken- zie's theory of referred pain so far as the uterus is con- cerned, and at the same time offers the hope that an improved technique will ensure painless childbirth without any risk to the mother or the child, and without the continuous attendance of an anaesthetist.
