Resumo

Distributed Bragg-reflector lasers of asymmetrical geometry are analyzed in the scheme of coupled-mode theory. Threshold solution for the laser gain and the longitudinal mode pattern is calculated for various values of the coupling coefficient of distributed Bragg-reflectors. It is shown that the asymmetrical geometry considered here has a minimum value of threshold gain, if the pumped length is chosen appropriately. The directional output and the corresponding mode pattern are designed by selecting the coupling coefficients k2 and k3 under the consideration for the desired ratio of field intensity and the minimization of gain. The advantage in having periodic structure outside the active medium is also discussed.
