Resumo

A computer model has been developed to predict the collection efficiency of a large pore Nuclepore filter. The model was applied to a 12-μm pore diameter filter, and collection efficiency was studied for operation in the cut point diameter range of 2–3.5 μm and as a function of flow rate, particle specific gravity, and filter thickness and porosity. Particle fractionation was sharpened at higher flow rates and specific gravities, and was unaffected by small variations in filter thickness and porosity. Experimental collection efficiencies verified the filter performance as predicted by the model for most flow rates and particle sizes of interest. The experimental data indicate that the theory begins to overpredict the efficiency at higher flow rates and larger particle diameters.
