Resumo

The novella The alienist brings perfectly pitched images of what Roberto Schwarz calls ideas out of place. With this structure of thought as a guideline, this article revisits Schwarz' s recent remarks on national and international readings of Machado, asks whether these remarks may possibly accommodate a friendlier account of the international reader, and turns to the novel Esau e Jacob for further examples.
