Resumo

A general formalism is developed for obtaining the relaxation rates for electromagnetically or acoustically excited nuclear or electronic spins interacting with a fluctuating quadrupole electric field. The results are expressed in terms of the correlation functions of the quadrupole field. Examples of such fields are those due to phonons, conduction electrons, and mobile charged impurities. In particular, we calculate the relaxation rate of Ta nuclear spins due to the field gradients generated by mobile hydrogen impurities. The results are in good agreement with nuclear-acoustic-resonance experiments on Ta.
