ResumoIn developing their high-speed system, the French opted for dedicated lines, but ensured that passengers could use existing terminals and link in with the conventional rail network to reach destination not on the high-speed network. The system, TGV, or Train a Grande Vitesse, currently holds the world speed record for wheel-on-rail technology and is operating on an expanding network that will soon connect cities in France with Brussels, London, and Cologne. TGV was developed following three fundamental principles: 1) Compatibility with the existing rail system; 2) Dedicated lines for high-speed passenger traffic; and 3) Train services scheduled at frequent intervals. The article examines the development of the TGV-Atlantique, which came into service at the end of 1990.
