Resumo

Various experiments were conducted to determine the conditions for the transfer of monolayers spread on an aqueous solution to the surface of a solid. Criteria are given for the recognition of collapse, rearrangement within the monolayer and leakage along the barrier. A definition of X- and Y-type films is given in terms of the ratio between the area occupied by the monolayer on the solid substrate and the area occupied on the aqueous surface. The transfer of long-chain fatty acids onto solid substrates has been investigated, especially with respect to the pH of the solution. Certain other amphipathic substances are also investigated. For mixtures of such substances, a correlation was found between the transfer ratio and the surface pressure at the transition between the liquid condensed and solid condensed phases of a monolayer.
